Build your in-house legal career with one of Queensland’s largest privately owned construction and property groups. McNab is seeking a new role to the group, for a commercially minded, yet relationship focused Legal Counsel (or Senior Legal Counsel) who enjoys variety, practical solutions over theoretical advice, and wants to be embedded within a business that likes to act with legal purpose proactively.

Reporting to the Group General Counsel, you'll play an important role in supporting the delivery of legal services and continuing to establish this function across the McNab Group. This is a hands-on role where you'll work across a diverse range of commercial, construction, property and corporate matters, helping the business navigate legal obligations, manage risk and achieve commercial outcomes early, because of your trusted advice and support. You'll work closely with experienced business leaders and gain exposure to a wide variety of legal matters while developing your commercial acumen and understanding of the construction, development and property sectors – all great industries to be in.

What you'll be doing

  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating various commercial contracts, agreements, and other legal documentation.
  • Providing practical legal advice and support to teams, operational leaders and corporate functions.
  • Assisting with contract interpretation, claims, variations and dispute-related matters.
  • Supporting property acquisitions, developments and commercial transactions.
  • Assisting with compliance initiatives, policy development and governance requirements.
  • Coordinating with external legal advisors where required.
  • Maintaining contract templates, legal precedents and matter management systems.
  • Monitoring legislative changes and supporting the implementation of business responses.
  • Assisting the Group General Counsel in managing legal risk across the business.
  • Contributing to legal training and capability-building initiatives.

What we're looking for

  • A lawyer who holds a current Bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) and current practicing certificate
  • 3-7 years post-admission experience would be ideal, across private practice or in-house role(s), and who enjoys solving problems and finding practical solutions to business outcomes.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality commercial outcomes proactively through their work
  • Someone who communicates clearly and can explain legal concepts in plain English calmly and professionally
  • A collaborative team player who enjoys supporting others.
  • Someone decisive and organised to manage competing priorities across multiple business entities and within a dynamic and fast paced environment
  • Good commercial judgement and a balanced approach to risk.
  • High integrity, professionalism and discretion.
  • A genuine desire to learn, develop and build long-term relationships across the business.
