McNab is one of the largest Construction, Development and Property groups in Australia, with turnover now exceeding $1bn each year. Despite our growth and size, we've never lost our small company DNA - which centres around genuine care for our staff, customers and all our stakeholders. Success for us isn't about awards or growth, it's when we deliver so well that our customers are proud to wear a McNab T-Shirt on weekends!
At McNab, we’re known for delivering certainty, building genuine relationships, and creating legendary outcomes for our clients, our people, and the communities we work in. The McNab Way is more than a set of values, it’s how we show up every day. We lead with care, back ourselves, pursue excellence relentlessly, and never compromise on quality, safety, or people. As our business continues to grow, we’re looking for a People & Culture Operations Lead to provide the specialist expertise that keeps our People & Culture function compliant, commercially focused and operating at its best.
About the role
This is a senior specialist role for someone who thrives on turning complexity into simplicity. As the legal and compliance backbone of our People & Culture function, you'll partner with Business Partners and leaders to navigate complex employee relations and industrial relations matters, providing practical, commercial advice when it matters most.
Beyond ER/IR, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting the Group's continued growth by identifying legal and compliance risks and opportunities associated with acquisitions, ensuring smooth workforce integration and robust governance. You'll also enjoy creating order behind the scenes—designing scalable systems, processes and workflows that enable a growing business to operate with confidence.
With responsibility for legislative compliance, policy governance, HR systems, data integrity and operational excellence, you'll ensure our people practices are not only compliant but also support a high-performing organisation today and as we continue to grow.
What you'll be doing
You'll take ownership of the ER/IR, as well as operational and compliance foundations of our People & Culture function, including:
- Provide expert advice on complex employee and industrial relations matters, including misconduct, performance management, investigations, redundancies, terminations, unfair dismissals and general protections.
- Interpret Modern Awards, Enterprise Agreements and employment legislation to provide practical guidance to leaders across our group of businesses.
- Manage legislative compliance across the Group, including WGEA reporting, Modern Slavery obligations and emerging employment legislation.
- Own our People & Culture policy framework, ensuring contracts, templates, position descriptions and documentation remain current, compliant and fit for purpose.
- Maintain the integrity of our people data and HR systems, while supporting the implementation of a future HRIS.
- Support business acquisitions through workforce due diligence, identifying employment risks and integrating new employees into McNab's people systems and processes.
- Lead our P&C coordination and administration team and overseeing employment lifecycle processing including onboarding, offboarding, contract variations, leave administration and compliance documentation.
About you
You'll be an experienced Employee & Industrial Relations professional (as opposed to generalist) with the confidence to navigate complex people matters while balancing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
This will see you bring:
- Extensive experience managing complex employee & industrial relations matters from start to finish, including investigations, terminations etc.
- Strong working knowledge of the Fair Work Act, Modern Awards, Enterprise Agreements and Fair Work Commission processes.
- The ability to interpret legislation and communicate complex information in a practical, simple and commercial way.
- Proven leadership experience and exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence outcomes and high-performance individuals
- Strong organisational skills, exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.
- A high level of accountability, taking ownership of your work and following through on commitments.
- The ability to remain calm under pressure, manage competing priorities and make sound decisions in complex situations.
- Experience within a scaling business model that requires effective workforce integration practices and an ability to support with M&A workstreams and activities, would be highly desirable
- Experience implementing HRIS platforms would be highly desirable
- Strong HR systems capability, with experience maintaining HRIS data and improving people processes, including using people data to drive informed decision-making.
- Experience within construction, manufacturing or other blue-collar industries will be highly regarded
